Duration: 1 hour
It’s an immersive experience spent with a Zapotec family in Teotitlán del Valle, in the home of a renowned master artisan.
You’ll visit the local market, cook traditional dishes hands-on, share lunch with the family, and learn ancestral weaving in their textile atelier — a genuine encounter with Oaxaca’s living heritage.
Guided by the family’s master cook, you’ll prepare traditional Oaxacan mole from scratch, grind cacao on the metate for a ceremonial drink, and make tortillas by hand from native corn using nixtamalization.
Everything is cooked over a comal and traditional stove, and you’ll sit down to enjoy the meal together with the family. Vegetarian options are available.
You’ll visit the family’s renowned weaving studio, home to a Zapotec master artisan, and learn about natural dyes such as cochineal, indigo, and pericón.
You’ll see the full weaving process on traditional pedal looms, discover how designs draw on Zapotec symbolism, and have time to browse or buy textiles directly from the family.
The meeting point is Teotitlán del Valle, a village famous for its weaving traditions in Oaxaca’s Central Valleys, about 45 minutes from Oaxaca City.
